You may love this wine more than anything else you have tried in years. Or you may hate it. But you are unlikely to have tasted anything similar.

Kéknyelű ("Blue Stalk") is an indigenous and very rare white grape variety, today only planted in the Badacsony area of Hungary, near the shores of Lake Balaton. A difficult grape to get the best out of, but the winemaker Laposa is acknowledged as a master of this grape, and is leading its renaissance. A really unusual aroma and taste - almost savoury, really long and chewy in the mouth. Dry, crisp acidity, high mineral character, notes of gun powder with a light floral, white blossom touch. Drink now, or it will develop for the next 3-4 years.

Recommended drinking temperature: 11-13°C.

Could be interesting match with grilled fish, sea food, or aged cheese.

Furmint grapes from Tokaj used to be best known for the sweet botrytised wines they produced, but this is a fine example of a dry wine produced from this revered indigenous grape variety. A fruity, but dry wine with refreshing minerality and acidity. Subtle hints of apricot and almond on the nose, long and chewy in the mouth.

Takler believes that Kadarka is the grape that built the reputation of Szekszárd. This bright, fruit-forward red wine was tank fermented with a small proportion aged in 2nd and 3rd fill Hungarian oak.

What the Critics say:
"Light ruby. Touch of red berries and strawberries; dry, with fresh acidity completed by spicy red fruits."
Brett, The Wine Maestro

About the Winery:

Takler is one of Szekszárd’s most highly regarded producers. Today Takler has 53 hectares across a dozen sites in the Szekszárd hills. They also buy from another 70-80 hectares. Takler pays its growers by area rather than per kg of grapes to encourage lower yields.

The winery has recently benefited from a 2 million euro investment (including 1m euros from the EU) to fund new vinification equipment and vineyard plantings.

The winery was founded in 1987 by Ferenc Takler (senior) and is run by Ferenc Takler himself, and his two sons. The family has been in the area since 1725, making the younger Ferenc the 9th generation winemaker here.

Ferenc Takler was awarded the prestigious title “Hungarian Winemaker of the Year” by the Hungarian Wine Academy in 1997.
